Index of Proper Names

At some point this may turn into a broader-based index of Proper names, but at this time it is only an Index to the biographies contained in the notes for the Michael Olds' translation of The Book of Ones. These entries consist primarily of quotations from The Dictionary of Pali Proper Names, published by The Pali Text Society: Reproduced by permission of the Pali Text Society which owns the copyright.

For an excellent selection of biographical material on Gotama from the Suttas, visit: http://www.accesstoinsight.org/ptf/buddha.html

Also see the Access to Insight Index to Proper Names

It is necessary to have installed the MozPali Font in order to view the names with the proper diacritical marks. This font can be downloaded from the Files and Download Links page. Without the MozPali font the page should be displayed in your default serif font (most likely Times Roman). Each name should appear at least once in this default font without diacritical marks, and once, if there are diacritical marks, using the Pali Text Society convention for conversion to normal characters.

For an interesting discussion of forms of address in Buddhist India, see the Mahali Sutta, Introduction.
