[ Uposatha ]

Calendar for 2003[1]

MOON PHASES

The following table gives the date and time (Greenwich Mean Time) of all phases of the Moon for 2003. For the year 2000, the length of the mean synodic month (New Moon to New Moon) is 29.53059 days

On BuddhaDust we are holding that "Uposatha" means "Preparation", and that the preparation was for the Soma ceremony and that this time of preparation was adopted by the Early Buddhists with the understanding that the Preparation here was to be for a complete, final acceptance of the idea that all things come to an end.

Consequently, the recommended practice here is:

From Sunset
on the day preceding the day preceding the date of the phase of the moon
to Daybreak of the day of the phase of the moon, eat only one meal
(before noon on the day preceding the date of the phase of the moon).
Keep the watch during the night of the day preceding the date of the phase of the moon

For example: Residing here in California, to observe the January 2nd, New Moon Uposatha:
From Sunset of December 31
To Daybrake of January 2
Eat only one meal: On January 1, before Noon.
Keep the Watch during the night of January 1.
The strong-man practice would be to also eat only one meal on January 2.

Please note that different Buddhist cultures observe Uposattha on different days and in different ways.
